How to put your heart
One way to recapture romance is to write a love letter.
In this fast-paced high-tech world, we don’t often put pen to paper. We just don’t take the time.
Greeting cards have certainly made a big business out of choosing our words for us and putting them on paper. We can even send electronic cards over the internet.
But there’s something special about slowing down, and actually writing a letter the old fashioned way--using your own memories and emotions to express how you feel about another.
So what do you do? How do you get started?
First, try to create a romantic mood....put on your favorite music, look at a picture of your loved one. And begin remembering....
Remember what it was like to fall in love--the thrill, how that infatuation stage made everything different. Remember how you noticed everything about each other? How you thought so much alike? How it seemed you were meant to be together?
Remember the first time you held hands, or a first kiss.
How you met.
Remember the romance....
But what do you write about? How do you begin?
Start your letter with an endearment: my beloved, dearest, or my precious love....
Shakespeare would follow with “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate....”
You can mimic this classic style by making a list of what makes your loved one so special--think of at least 3 characteristics. Now, take a descriptive word, perhaps gentle, and think of something else in nature that shares that quality. Complete the comparison by stating that your beloved is infinitely greater in that quality.
Think about three virtues your beloved possesses--list these and express how few people possess even one of these, and yet your beloved has all three.
Describe how your love has been tested over time, or describe the forever quality you desire for your love.
Shakespeare said, “Hearing you praised, I say, “‘Tis so, ‘tis true,” And to the most of praise add something more...”
Share a compliment with your love--share how much you agree with others’ views of your beloved.
And when you are describing your feelings--choose words that paint a picture of how you feel.
What are some favorite memories shared? How would you finish this sentence: “Today, as I was thinking about us, I remembered when we...”
Include a paragraph that shares your hopes and dreams for the future you can have together.
Then, personalize the closing, and sign it.
Spray the letter with fragrance.
Then decide how to deliver it. · You could mail it--maybe choose a special stamp and put your lip prints on the envelope. · Or place your love note under a pillow. · Hide it in her purse. In his wallet · Attach it to a bouquet of flowers · Tape it to the bathroom mirror · Place it in his lunchbox with a sweet treat · Next to a morning cup of coffee · Taped to the car dashboard
Or, just walk right up to your love and hand it to them.
Now...decide on your recipient, and begin....
